DAY 1-3 LOW FIBRE DIET:
commence 5 days prior to procedure
CHOOSE: Plain white bread/ muffins/ bread rolls/Crumpets/Plain
Croissants/Semolina/Cornflakes/Rice Bubbles/Plain Cakes/ Biscuits/Plain Pancakes/
Pikelets/White Rice/White Pasta/Couscous/Polenta/Pita Bread/Bagels.
AVOID: whole meal or multigrain bread, wholegrain cereals including bran and Weetabix, cakes and biscuits containing nuts and dried fruit, brown rice and pasta, unprocessed bran, rolled
oats, porridge, Muesli, brown crumpets, muffins with fruit and whole meal flour and oatmeal.
CHOOSE: Potato, Pumpkin without skin ,squash, avocado, mushrooms, ripe banana, apple,
peach with no skin, pears, rockmelon, watermelon, canned peaches/apricots/apple/pear.
AVOID: All other fruit and vegetables, including salad vegetables.
Meat and Other Protein Foods:
AVOID: Baked Beans/Casseroles/Lentils/Legumes/Rissoles/Stirfry Meals/Nuts/Seeds/Pizza
CHOOSE: Water/Tea/Coffee/Plain Milk/Cordial/Clear Soups/Milo/Strained Fruit
AVOID: Unstrained fruit juices, red and green coloured drinks
CHOOSE: Clear Jelly (not red), clear hard boiled sweets, strained jams, vegemite, honey
AVOID: Jams with skins and seeds, Peanut paste, Dried fruits and nuts, Marmalade
DAY 4: THE DAY BEFORE YOUR PROCEDURE
As soon as you wake up the day prior to your procedure no solid foods or milk products are
allowed. Drink only Approved Clear Fluids see list below.
Approved Clear Fluids:
Clear salty fluids (e.g.: strained chicken noodle soup, clear broth/bonox/stock cubes). Clear
fruit juice (apple/lemon)
Plain jelly (yellow or orange)
Black tea or coffee (no milk)
Sports drinks (yellow or orange), Gastrolyte, cordials (lemon/orange).
No red/purple/blue/green food colourings.
Barley sugar may also be sucked if required.
Preparation of Picosalax Solution
Dissolve the contents of one sachet of Picosalax in one full glass (approximately 250mls) of
warm water. This may be chilled prior to use if you prefer.
1. At approximately 1pm drink one sachet of Picosalax.
2. At approximately 5pm, repeat the above.
3. At approximately 9pm, repeat the above.
Continue drinking Approved Clear Fluids until 6 hours prior to your admission time.
You may have water until 3 hours prior to admission.
Then NIL BY MOUTH.
Diabetics - Should contact your General Practitioner/Diabetic Educator for
Medication/Insulin dosage adjustments.
Sodium Picosulphate - Gastrointestinal Lavage Preparation
PICOSALAX: Each sachet contains Sodium Pciosulphate 10mg, Magnesium Oxide 3.5g, Citric acid 12g,
Potassium Bicarbonate 500mg, Saccharin sodium 60mg, Orange Flavour 60mg.
